History of Hay-on-Wye Bowling Club

The first Bowling Club in Hay-on-Wye was at Brookfield House by the side of the Conservative Club owned by D.J. Pugh the Taylor in the late forties early fifties. Later Hay and Brecon Farmers built their corn drying facilities and Mill on the site.

The present Bowling Green in Brecon Road was built by Powys County Council and opened in 1987. On the 29th January 1987 a public meeting was held with 28 people attending. A Committee was formed and Officers elected. President Mr D Ratcliffe, Vice President Mr B Battin, Chairman Major Lloyd Jones, Vice Chairman Mr Spooner, Secretary Mrs. D Ratcliffe, Treasurer Mr B Lopez, Fixtures Secretary Mr I Morgan.

A decision was made in 1991 to join the Mid Wales Bowling Association and play in the Mid Wales League. The men play a total of sixteen league matches and the ladies play twelve league matches. Full details can be found in the fixtures section.

The design of the club badge representing Hay Church, Town Clock, Books, and Bowls was the result of a competition by the children of Hay Primary School and was won by Stephen Davies the grandson of Club member Hilary Keeble.
